Welcome to the website of the South-West British Shorthair Cat Club (SWBSCC). We hope you enjoy your visit.
We are a relatively new cat club, which held its inaugural meeting on 26th November 2005 and we are dedicated to the British Shorthair breed.
The aims and purposes of the club are:
1)To encourage and promote interest and understanding in the welfare, breeding and exhibiting of the British Shorthair.
2)To support shows for the exhibiting of all cats.
3)To provide the means of meeting together of persons interested in the breed and its welfare.
We are now affiliated to the GCCF (Autumn 2009) and hope to hold our own show here in the South West in the near future. Watch this space!
Breed description
British Shorthair cats have very dense soft coats. They do not require a lot of grooming because the fur does not tangle or mat easily. The lifespan of the breed is about 9 to 15 years.
The British Shorthair is one of the largest breeds of cat. It is chunky and substantial and the male is much larger than the female. The face is round with full cheeks and the nose is short and broad. The chin is deep and strong. The eyes are large and round with the head set on a short thick neck.
The body is rounded and sturdy. The breed has a broad chest, shoulders and hips with short legs, round paws and a plush tail.
The British Shorthair originates from the native working cats of the United Kingdom, which in turn originated in Rome.
The British Shorthair is an easygoing breed. It is not normally destructive or hyperactive, although it can be playful.
